Rasmus Schjødt Pedersen:

From Arnie and Little Sun to Getting It Done

Sustainability as a discipline is coming of age. It is changing shape and there is a new hunger for facts, figures and return of investment on all things related to sustainability. So, if you’re a CEO, CFO or sustainability executive I invite you to use our resources in your pursuit to deliver on your green ambition. Our upcoming newsletters will act as “How-to guides” where we break down the deliverables that are expected of you.

Copenhagen, September 2021

In 2012 we teamed up with Arnold Schwarzenegger to raise awareness about climate change. We asked the famous actor, governor, and climate activist to come to Copenhagen and chair our Sustainia 100 committee in search of the best and brightest solutions available. The following year at the 2013 Sustainia Award ceremony together with famed Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson we handed out 1.300 of his Little Suns to form a collective interactive spectacle in the Royal Danish Theatre. A beautiful shared experience of sustainable solar light in action. A sea of Little Suns in coordinated movement.

Such shared action made a lot of sense in a world that needed encouragement to take concrete steps forward, and we’re proud to have led a movement of awareness at a time when business leaders were not that interested in sustainability.

That was then, this is now. Today, sustainability is here, there, everywhere. Before, few paid attention, now companies struggle to get noticed. Everybody’s green, or so it seems. This newfound interest and affection raises the bar for everybody. Sustainability as a discipline is coming of age. It is changing shape and there is a new hunger for facts, figures and return of investment on all things related to sustainability. Doing good for the sake of purpose or a favorable public image won’t cut it anymore, and we see new sustainability roles form throughout the corporations that play a pivotal role in the green transition.

Arnold Schwarzenegger & Sustainia

We would like to prepare you better for this new reality. At Sustainia we embrace our legacy of identifying opportunities and raising awareness. Yet, we know the world of professionals craves more, and we have ourselves transitioned to focus deeper on strategy and operations. We’ve moved from Arnie and Little Sun to getting things done.

So, if you’re a CEO, CFO or sustainability executive I invite you to use our resources in your pursuit for delivering on your green ambition. Whether you are dipping your toes in the alphabet soup of non-financial disclosure standards and strategic frameworks, or you have been at it for a while, guidance on how to actually get the job done and measure return on investment can be tricky. “How do we get started, and then what do we do next”, is a common problem, and we know a lot of executives ask themselves those very questions.

Our upcoming newsletters will act as “how-to guides” where we break down the deliverables that are expected of you. You may find value in these guides whether you’re part of the Board and executive management, or in a finance, sustainability, HR or marcom role. In any case we invite you to take advantage of our counsel that is based on more than a decade of practical experience with clients and partners from across the globe.

So expect practical guidance on managing ESG in all its facets, or how to build a sustainability strategy that is rooted in the most commonly used frameworks. We will offer roadmaps for the most ambitious and for those with less resources. How to get organised; roles and responsibilities, and all the bells and whistles. Which international partnerships to form and how they can help you align your company with the Paris Agreement and carve out your path to reduce emissions. We will guide you through one of the earliest exercises – the materiality assessment – that reveals the most important issues for you to focus on. We help you set up targets – science based or less ambitious yet sufficient ones. If you are wondering how you stack up against the competition we will provide guidance on how to conduct an industry benchmark – or at least how we do it with hundreds of indicators. And what about guidance on how to pick the best platform for managing sustainability? We’ll describe what you should look for in a system that automates both tracking, reporting and disclosure.

Perhaps managing sustainability intrigues you less than learning which solutions exist in a given industry or a particular region. Through the years we have built the Global Opportunity Explorer with DNV and UN Global Compact and discovered an ocean of sustainable products and services already readily available in the market. I invite you to browse the vast collection of content – more than a thousand solutions – already vetted and verified inspiration on what is being done. There you’ll also find lots of great advice from seasoned executives of some of the most ambitious companies on the planet. You don’t have to walk in their footsteps, but perhaps there’s an opportunity to learn from their experiences.

As always, let us know if there is a subject you would like to receive guidance on. You are welcome to reach out to us here – we are ready to help you get the job done.
